NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nielsen//NetRatings, a global leader in Internet media and market research, today announced that the number of Americans with broadband access reached 42 percent of the U.S. population in August, increasing 16 percent since the beginning of this year (see Table 1). In January 2005, 103.8 million Americans had broadband access; by August, that figure had grown to 120.8 million. These figures were compiled from the Nielsen//NetRatings panel and report the connection speeds of those with Internet access at home. 16% since January 1, 2005, and 34% Year-over-Year from Aug-to-Aug.
I am not sure how that translates into the number of homes with broadband access, 42% of the population and 60% of internet users is impressive.
Of interest, Narrowband dropped from 64M to 60M, while broadband rose from 54M to 86M. This indicates people who previously did not have internet access have taken the online plunge and have gone straight to broadband.
Pretty amazing growth, especially when a lot of predictions expected 2005 to slow down in the US (although expected worldwide growth was projected to be brisk at 30% growth with and estimated 215M broadband accounts at the end of 2005, compared to the 165M at the end of 2004).
