this is rather shocking. maybe XGI will be some sort of a viable card on Linux?

apparently it's only half-open, some of it is still binary-only, but it's a start, I guess.
I think it is a nice way to decline support.

Yup, and I'm pretty sure the open source community can do a better job on the drivers. ;)

Looks like S3/VIA have done the same as well (http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=497686#497686).

Both S3 and XGI are basically playing the same move as nVidia. The 2D core is opensource while everything 3D is propriatary. It's a start, but until someone actually releases opensource 3D drives it's not terribly exciting. The 2D stuff is pretty much old hat now.

yea this SOUNDS exciting until you read into it... really what would XGI loose from opening their 3d acceleration portion of their drivers up? I can see a lot of upsides.
VIA has had it's source code available for some time, it was simply released more publically, now you don't have to sign up to their developer program or some such.

They only released the 2D portion of their drivers? What good is that? :?
