The difference is that XFree choose a "non free software compliant" license (contained an advertising clause) and they forked the latest version (the last one that shipped under gpl) and continued developing their own version of X (X.org). Nowadays XFree has little developers, because most went to X.org and X.org is in many feature superior to XFree.

There was a whole soap opera regarding this, google it.

The only reason I use XFree is because that's what suse 9.1 personal comes with -- single cd dl and you've got a suse system up and running, can't beat it.

I'm hoping they release another iso soon.

Suse 10 makes use of X.org. It's doubtful that they'll release another "personal" type CD anytime soon, if ever, as that was last updated in June of 2004. I'd recommend just biting the bullet and going with the full 5-CD opensuse installation here (http://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/iso/), if you want to stick with Suse.

The only up to date single-CD linux I know about is Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/). This distribution is all about running linux just from a bootable CD (i.e. not installing it).

Edit: Gawd, didn't realize how old this thread was. Oh, well.

Actually, Mandriva Move comes on 1 bootable CD as well

I think lots and lots of distro's come on one bootable CD, infact I'd be pretty annoyed if one didn't.

Well, they all offer bootable CD's for installation, but not many are available on just one any longer, except for net installs.

You need latest Xorg for Xgl, so who wouldn't pick it up ?!

actually i dont use xgl for 3dcoding but Mesa over DFB :twisted:
the truth is im using an old video chip :roll:
... inside kernel src <DRM_SECTION> the board is not avaliable :sad:
so even if i put my hands on Xorg everything will slow unless there's no need kernel layer for
direct rendering
