http://www.beyond3d.com/siteimages/b3dsmall.gif (http://www.beyond3d.com/misc/cebit05/)Beyond3D attended This years CeBit to catch up with the graphics vendors, in order to find out what new happening there are with ATI and NVIDIA and to also catch up with S3 and XGI, who we don’t hear quite as much of, to find out what their outlook on thing is.

Here we take a look at the new chipset platforms that both ATI and NVIDIA announced at CeBit, find out about the more interesting new board variants that are coming up, get more details on S3’s S18 graphics and take a look at XGI’s future roadmap. Read more here (http://www.beyond3d.com/misc/cebit05/).

Are there two 8-bit ISA slots on the RS400 reference board? Surely not, but otherwise what are those strange slots on the far right?

Edit: And the board has JAGUAR and their logo on it, any ideas why?

Those are PCI slots. And I guess ATI must have a connection with Jaguar Automotive, as they are very protective of their name & logo. They forced the local NFL team named The Jacksonville Jaguars to change their original logo because it was too close to Jaguar Autos in looks......if any are interested......

The RS400 board is an ATI internal board, so those extra connectors may just be for diagnostic purposes. I think the Jaguar name is just the board codename - like the Bullhead fish and I've also seen a "Lynx" board.

Those are PCI slots. <snip>

Erm...I meant the connectors on the far right, i.e. the brown ones that look like 8-bit ISA slots, I'm pretty sure most people know what PCI slots are!

I'm guessing they are diagnostic slots like DB has said.

256 + 26 != 512. :wink:

Dave,

Good article.

Typo:
NVIDIA did have the new 512MB GeForce 6800 Ultra reference boards on hand though, which are soon going on sale through a few board vendors. Although the layout of the 6800 boards appear to have been designed to support 512MB memory in the first place the board design did need changing from the 256MB variants, presumably because of the extra power requirements of the extra 26MB of RAM.

I wonder if ATI have ex ATARI engineers working for them. I seem to recall a name of one such senior engineer at ATARI who was redesigning the Tom and Jerry chips into a single chip solution for Jaguar 2.. Richard Miller maybe? Anyway the names Jaguar and Lynx definitely have an ATARI-esque feel to them.
