I was wondering what the recommened Power Supply For Athlon XP processor is? I have a 250W PS and my PC randomly hangs in OPENGL or DirectX. Im using the same components from my old Intel 750mhz machine, which was stable. Do you think that the PS may be causing the hangs?

Thanks,

depends...
you should have 20A on + 5 V and 30A on +3.3 V

see here (http://faq.babylonsounds.com/kap10.html#10.2.1) (its in german, you have to scroll down a little for the table)

generally a 250W PS is not enough for an Athlon, but some good PS work fine

if you get a new PS, i'd recommend an Enermax 350W

I think you should look at the www.amd.com website, I remember they are making recommendations about the kind of power supply you should use.

I think (not sure) recommendations are :
ATX 300W minimum
Two air fan (one under, one as normal) to better cool the case and CPU.

[And yes, it's two fans on the power supply]

thats not enough. it has to have 20A on +5V and 30A on +3.3V; some cheap 300W Power supplies have less than that.
(but this doesnt mean that weaker PS wont work... my old 300W had 25A and 14A or something like that, but it worked)

Do you think that an insufficient PS will cause my PC to hang? It works fine in windows, but crashes in OpenGL and DirectX apps.

340w to 400w for both the AthlonXP and P4 CPU's

honestly i dont know... it can be a driver problem too, do you have the newest 4in1(assuming you have a Via based mainboard)/GFX/Sound drivers?

If you are in the UK I reccommend that beast.

£32 in total (inc shipping)... 550W

All within P4 and AMD spec.. two fans and therfore super cool and not very noisy.

Review comparing it to a £100 Antec 550W to be found at:
