View Full Version : Just a humble little request....

...if'n you feel the need to delete some posts, could you mayhaps PM the author of said posts with just a quick note explaining your actions?
It might help said authors from repeating the same behavoir rather than just being puzzled at why half their morning posts disapear. :?
I am not criticizing the deletion nor requesting public explanations, just a brief PM would be nice though.

I am sure Dave will get to it (explaining his deleting/editing) when he has the time. The first priority is to maintain forum/thread focus and reduce noise. The next priority would be an explanation.
Unless an explanation isn't necessary if deleting/editing is obviously silently welcomed by the majority.

mmh..
Speaking of which, would deleting the content and replacing it by "[Moderator : noise]" or something like that be fine with you ?
Or do you prefer message deletion and private message.

Either or, it's just unless we know why we were deleted than we'll keep making the same mistake. :?

The Major Rule :
Respect folks you honestly don't know much about.
Politely express your disagreement.
Don't go OT too much/too often. Respect the thread authors' reason for starting a thread.
Respect folks you honestly don't know much about.
Respect the reason why you are even able to participate in the Beyond3D forums.
Practice Humility, even if you know for sure you are not wrong.
Recognize that this is a public forum -- it is not a stage for ticking off folks that don't know much about 3D (they're here to learn) or policies nor is it a competition where public admittance of ignorance is penalized.
IOW, practice self-restraint as much as you can. Our forums will be a much better experience.
If all of us can do all of the above, there won't be any need for deleting/editing by the admins/mods.
rev... slightly OT but what if someone posts here for genuine reasons, and then one day after watching your Doom 3 playing "experience" goes all nuts?
can we hold you personally repsonsible for these unforseen reactions?
---
other than that, its a good thing that the "noise" is in fact being addressed... some threads were getting a little busy for all the wrong reasons..

Gladly ! :)
NOTE : 1st Instance of OT. By the 3rd instance, thread will be locked. ...... :)
What do you think of the above "warning" method of moderation?
devlish... but very effective...
/me thinks a new general announcement wrt OT posts might help curb the flow some...

I would question how it would work in larger threads. Perhaps split rather than just lock the whole damn thing?

Yeah sounds a bit too harsh.
I would rather go with noise ratio > 10% = thread locked.

I agree, if there are too many off topic strains but they are all being followed, why not lock the thread and create several new ones addressing the issues and point the users to them with a link. Of course, if a thread is already present that has the topic, a link to that will do as well.

currently the forum cannot do this. I think its one of the things most asked for in the new b3d website/forum.

Please don't delete posts, edit them and place "post removed for content by moderator" or something.
Deleting posts seems to screw up the pagination and posts get lost 'between' pages.

unless it's a hack that I didn't realize was installed, phpbb 2.0.10 can...

phpBB 2.0.x can split threads, it can't join them. Splitting threads is just time consuming and a pain in the arse, so we don't do it that often.

whoops, sorry got the 2 confused. thought you could join threads not split them. Had it backwards. thanks for the heads up.

That's what i thought. At least the post count won't change. Cause we all know that the post count is tightly connected to something very important to us guys...
