Why is it when the slider bar in ATI's Control Panel --> 3d--> D3d/Open GL window is moved to extreme right (highest quality) it defaults settings to 4X AA with 16X anisoptry?

Would 6X AA not be higher quality? Or is there so much compression loss utilizing 6X AA that 4X AA is actually superior in terms of anti aliasing quality?

The most likely reason is the fact that unless you play in resolutions lower than 1024x768 6x is overkill. Once you don't see any more 'jaggies' its just a waste of performance.
