View Full Version : Shogun:Total War / Mongol Invasion and Vivid!XS problems

Hi all,
I have serious trouble getting Shogun to run on my Vivid!XS.
Im running WinXP prof & Videologic !XS drivers (V1.05.15.0084)

The problems I have are as follows:
Shogun: Total War -> looks more like a slideshow than anything else, even software rendering is faster. Apart from the 5 fps or so, the mouse stutters like mad (although that's probably linked to the framerate)

So I upgraded to
Shogun: The Mongol Invasion -> framerate issues are gone, everything runs silky smooth!
BUT, now I can't move the units anymore in the 3D view! The cursor just doesn't change to the move cursor (the one with the four yellow arrows) and I can click until my finger falls off but nothing moves. Oddly enough, moving units does work in the mini map (yellow arrowed cursor and all).

So in essence I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't.

Did anybody get this to run on a Vivid? Does anyone have the same problems?
Kristof? Anyone?

This is due to KYRO`s not implemented Z-buffer.
The driver settings gives you the option "enable external depth-/stencil buffer", means that an external buffer in the local memory is used, not the one located in KYRO (which makes it very fast in applications using a lot of stencil operations). This external buffer dramatical slows down any game - but when it´s not enabled (like in Mongol Invasion), the speed is normal, but the cursor`s position (which is stored in the buffer) is misinterpreted by the game hence you can`t activate any unit...
Sorry, but there is no solution other than playing with "external depth buffer" switched on :(...

Thanks for your reply Modulor.

I got it sorted out now, it turns out that Shogun and MI are DirectX apps and not OpenGL, so I had been twiddling the wrong driver settings :)

It was the 'shogun.icd' file that threw me for a loop.
Performance doesn't suffer much though with the external Z-buffer enabled. It's a bit slower but very much playable.
